“brand new scottish music”: withered hand

Oh yeah readers, I’m still in love with scottish bands! And because my fanatism with music from scotland music made me create 8 different playlists in itunes I decided to start posting some of my favourite. You remember about “we were promised jetpacks” no? Here something different, a singer/songwriter from edinburgh, withered hand.

Withered hand is Dan Willson. He sings like a man who’s only ever received party invitations for wakes and funerals. Lyrics like “You’re singing religious songs and getting the words wrong” or “I’d do anything to get my dick insider her/But that’s not what she wants to hear me say” it makes you think how he mix things like religion and sex in a same album/song. The result is really good (hard to think at the beginning).

With 2 EP’s and the first LP, Good News, the band has become without a doubt one of my favourite discoveries of 2009.

Lyrically, Withered Hand’s biggest influence is the Silver Jews (death, despair, Jesus and black humour); and musically you have the alt rock of Silver Jews mixed with this kind of folk sound and an awesome voice. Just check his myspace and buy the album, if you are interested.
